Part 1

One professional one would benefit from getting to befriend is a financial advisor starting his career about the same time as oneself. Then, as the client’s needs expand and the advisor’s expertise matures, the trust and partnership that got built over the years really begins to pay dividends: over the years the advisor would have got to know the client and her family, her attitude to wealth and financial risk, her dreams and her value system. Over the years, the advisor no longer remains just an advisor, but becomes a part of the client’s extended “family”, someone who then should be able to steer the client to what she has identified as the end-goal of her financial productivity. A young Tom Allen picked up the phone one afternoon as it rang at his new job at John Charcol the summer of 2010. I was the caller, looking for a mortgage for a modest one-bedroom flat that had caught my eye. What caught my attention on this call was Tom’s deafening silence as he intently listened to what I was seeking. He then repeated back to me what he heard and understood, and went on to offer a suite of solutions for my situation, deftly laying out the pros and cons of each. That was the summer day about fifteen years ago when I knew I had found the financial advisor that would become my extended “family”.

And indeed he did – as, over the past decade and a half, I and my wife aged, and our children grew, and our wealth swelled, and governments came and went, changing investment and retirement laws on their whims and fancies, Tom Allen was the one constant in our financial planning who was always available at the other end of the line – whether to seek the best mortgage interest rates, or to discuss inheritance planning strategies, or to debate ideas on economic trends, or even to exchange notes on the differences between training his labrador and our golden retriever. In this together-journey over fifteen years, Tom got to know my mind, my values, my priorities, my (risk) appetite, and now, when my financial affairs have become more complex than ever before – as it does for everyone as they go through life – there is no one else I would trust more than myself, except Tom Allen. If you ask me: should you, too? I challenge you back: at your risk, try not to. Trust me: I have been a financial services industry professional since the mid 1990s, and I have not come across anyone with a higher level of integrity, objectivity, and ethical standards than Tom Allen who could do what he does and has always done for me and my family.
